Richard and Mary Davies are the team at Self Reliance, we live on a smallholding outside Somerset West. We grow a wide variety of our own food using environmentally sustainable practices. We produce pastured eggs, not free range (that term is widely misunderstood in South Africa) eggs,which we have supply to our friends. We also produce our own pastured broiler chickens in larger mobile coops. Our urban friends asked us to supply them with a similar design for raising their own eggs and this was the spark for the formation the company.
We know that industrial agriculture has provided us with food in the past and will continue so some time into the future but many ask at what price to our health and the environment? For those who do ask this question, the first step in the transition away from this process is through either knowing your producer or producing the food yourself. Our focus is on providing the tools and advice on the latter.
Richardsís skills include formal qualifications in agriculture as well as living the life on our smallholding and 'practising what we preach'. He has over 20 years experience working in terrestrial ecosystems in conservation areas, both state, communal and private in southern Africa. This underpins our sustainability advice and planning. He is a professional member of the Southern African Institute of Ecologists and Environmental Scientists as well as the Grassland Society of Southern Africa.
